The best of the Holstein Friesian breed was celebrated at the 2023 Holstein Friesian NZ Awards held in Nelson on June 26, as part of the 2023 HFNZ AGM & Conference.
Eighty Holstein Friesian breeders, sponsors and supporters gathered at the Tides Hotel to see awards presented to breeders whose animals excelled in production, performance, progeny, components, genomics, youth, showing and photography categories.
The 2023 Valden Cow of the Year was awarded to Raymac Oman Tansy EX2 3* SP, bred by Stephen and Judith Ray of Balclutha.
2007-born Tansy, who passed away in April 2022, has been a top-six finalist in the Valden Cow of the Year four times, and did her best production as a nine-year-old: 10,588 litres (737kgMS – 385g fat, 352kg protein) in 291 days.
“Tansy’s family originated from when we first started sharemilking in 1987,” Judith Ray said. “And perhaps a little bit more specially, she came from my father’s herd, as part of a group of heifers we bought from him.
“Cows you buy in that do well for you is thrilling, because often they don’t fit into your system. Persistence is the word with these older cows, in terms of if they hang around long enough, keep their udder, produce heaps of calves and you end up with a good bunch of animals from them. With Tansy, that’s been the case.
“I commend the Association for rewarding persistence, because it’s something that we all have to do.”
The 2023 Mahoe Trophy went to Glenmead Gaunt Motto S1F, bred by Kevin and Felicity Clark of Glenmead Farms Ltd (519.89 points). The Mahoe Trophy is awarded to the New Zealand-bred Holstein Friesian sire whose sire proof, as at the April 2023 AE Run, earns the most points for traits, daughter production, conformation and management. Motto is marketed by CRV.
Henley Farming Company Ltd (Nathan and Amanda Bayne) was the convincing winner of the Holstein Friesian NZ Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Senior and Junior Progeny Competitions with San Ray FM Beamer-ET S2F (446.00 points) and Meander SB Arrow-ET S2F (304.78 points) teams respectively.
These awards are presented to the Junior and Senior Progeny teams with the highest points for classification based on the 2022/23 seasons inspections, scores for udder overall and final score, production worth and protein BV.
CView Trust (Stefan Buhler, Hawera) was the overall winner of the 2023 Nutritech Performance Awards, with $6,979.30.
For this award, prizes are awarded to herd owners with the highest dollar earning herd average for their region based on the Fonterra A+B-C payment system for the 2021/22 Season.

Charlie was also the overall winner of the 2023 All NZ Black & White Youth Class Calf Competition.

The winners were judged on calf conformation, background, presentation of animal and presentation of handler, by 2023 judges Michael Gilbert and Isaac Kelsen.
