2022 Holstein Friesian NZ Awards

The best of the Holstein Friesian breed was celebrated at the 2022 Holstein Friesian NZ Awards held in Palmerston North on Monday, June 20, as part of the 2022 HFNZ AGM & Conference.

Over 90 Holstein Friesian breeders, sponsors and supporters gathered at the Copthorne Hotel to see awards presented to breeders whose animals excelled in production, performance, progeny, components, genomics, youth, showing and photography categories.

In the production awards, Stephen and Judith Ray of Raymac Holsteins, Balclutha won the Boehringer Ingelheim Progeny Competition Senior Team title for the second year in a row with Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET, while the Boehringer Ingelheim Progeny Competition Junior Team title went to Tronnoco Farming Co Ltd, Timaru, with Batenburg G. Stellando.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Progeny Competition is awarded to the Senior and Junior Progeny teams with the highest points for classification based on the current seasons’ inspections, scores for Udder Overall and Final Score, Production Worth and Protein BV.

The 2022 Valden Cow of the Year Trophy went to Lornlace Mint Deva-ET VG87 23*ET SP of Ash Farm Ltd, Putaruru (Adrian and Sally Henderson), and the 2022 Mahoe Trophy was awarded to Rivendell MFU Scotch of Rivendell Farm Ltd, Otautau (Owen and Cathy Copinga).

CView Trust (Stefan Buehler, Hawera) was once again the stand-out in the field for top-producing cows, winning the 2022 Nutritech Performance Overall Award with $5,872.54; the World Wide Sires Protein Awards Overall Award with Buelin FME Gracie S0F GP83 with 542kg Protein and the Snowline Trophy (top dollar-earning veteran cow for the previous season) with Buelin Rock Robin S0F GP82, with $7,003.91.

The popular DeLaval-HFNZ All NZ Photo Competition Class 1 was won by Joyclas Sammy Moo S3F EX of Joyclas Friesians, Palmerston North; Moo was the winner of the 2022 NZDE Supreme All Breeds Champion Cow, 2022 NZDE Holstein Friesian Supreme Champion Cow, and 2022 Holstein Friesian North Island Supreme Champion Cow, among others. A Canterbury cow won Class 2, and Waikato cows won Classes 3-5.

HFNZ Black & White Youth members were also celebrated, with Hamilton‘s Gabrielle Scherer winning the Arapeta Trophy and Otorohanga’s Annie Gill winning the Kingsland Trophy, also going on to win the Overall All NZ Calf Class Competition, sponsored by STgenetics.

This competition offers young members between 5-21 the opportunity to earn points by entering a photo in the Black & White Photo Competition and submitting a video of themselves with their calf.

Otautau’s Lina Buhre was awarded the 2022 Lenslea Trophy, given to a person who has been a member of Holstein Friesian New Zealand for less than ten years and who has displayed the greatest effort and enthusiasm in preparing and showing Holstein Friesians in the current show season.

HFNZ President Doug Courtman said the annual Holstein Friesian NZ Conference was a time of celebration.
“It is a time when the host branch can highlight their breeders and local attractions,” he said. “We celebrate, at a national level, the winning breeders and animals that contribute to making our Holstein Friesian breed so successful.”
