Strong Holstein Friesian bull sales reflect continued value

The value of Holstein Friesian bulls on farm has remained strong following the 63rd Annual National Holstein Friesian Bull Sale held in September.

The sale, a hybrid on-saleyard auction also hosted by Bidr, saw 75 head of cattle from 18 vendors go under the hammer, with 68 sales completed.

Three bulls – one two-year-old bred by Cloverlea Trust (Chris and Emma Poole, Te Awamutu) and two yearlings bred by MJ Dickson (Murray Dickson, Te Awamutu) and Maharee Farms Ltd (Brendan White, Taupiri) – fetched $5,000, the top price of the sale.

The sale earnt $212,350 in total, with the average yearling fetching $3,145; the average 18-month-old fetching $3,631, and the average two-year-old fetching $3,565. The average price overall was $3,122.

Auctioneer Andrew Reyland said the auction held a fantastic line-up of exceptionally well-bred Holstein Friesian bulls.

The catalogue included bulls from both high BW, New Zealand-bred cow families that have supplied numerous sons to AI, and overseas genetics that have proven conformation and production traits needed in a higher input system.

Holstein Friesian bulls are valuable on farm for not only providing a variety of strong pedigree genetics, but contributing superior protein and milkfat breeding values; sought-after and valuable Holstein Friesian calves, and as a strong contender for a beef-cross animal.

Holstein Friesian NZ General Manager Cherilyn Watson said the excellent prices raised at the sale was testament to the continued value and diversity of the Holstein Friesian breed on farm.
