The NZ Milking Shorthorn Association will join Guernsey NZ and Brown Swiss NZ under the administrative management of New Zealand’s largest breed society in 2025.
As of March 1, 2025, all NZ Milking Shorthorn breed society services – such as registration, classification and promotion – will be handled by Holstein Friesian NZ.
NZ Milking Shorthorn Association President David Wood said the move would be a great opportunity for the Association to be involved with Holstein Friesian NZ.
“We anticipate there will be minimal disruption to our members and services throughout the transition,” he said. “It is exciting to look forward to the future; we are all on the same wavelength.”
Shorthorn cattle, believed to be the oldest breed in New Zealand, were introduced from England to provide milk and meat and pull bullock teams.
From the milking strains introduced, the Milking Shorthorn breed was established and the NZ Milking Shorthorn Association was founded in 1913.
Today, the NZ Milking Shorthorn Association has 80 members, and is governed by a five-strong Board of breeders from throughout New Zealand.
Holstein Friesian NZ General Manager Cherilyn Watson said Holstein Friesian NZ looked forward to working with the NZ Milking Shorthorn Association.
“We look forward to this exciting new chapter and getting to know NZ Milking Shorthorn members as we offer them comprehensive breed society services,” she said. “We aim to make the transition as smooth as possible.”
