The Canterbury A&P Show On-Farm competition proved a charm for North Canterbury dairy farmers Sherraine Holsteins, their top black and white cow winning Grand Champion Holstein and the overall Grand Champion All Breeds titles.
Concerns over Covid-19 meant the Canterbury A&P Show took on a different format this year, breeders preparing their animals on-farm for showing.
Sherraine Gold Charm-ET, owned by the North Canterbury based Sherriff family, won the Grand Champion Holstein title and Grand Champion All Breeds, backing up her win in the Holstein Friesian NZ Semex On Farm Competition, held earlier this year.

Charm is part of a 144-cow herd run by Olivia and Jared Cahill and Olivia’s parents Peter and Rhonda Sherriff on 150 hectares.
Peter Sherriff said the on-farm format was “a bit different” for the show this year and breeders missed the chance to be in the ring, but he said he was pleased Charm was able to win both the Grand Champion Holstein and the All Breeds titles.
“She’s an exceptional cow. She is just so correct in every way and she has a tremendous udder.”
She produced 6774.8 litres of milk last season and 482kg of milk solids.
During judging cows are assessed for their structural correctness. Productive dairy cows with well-attached udders have the potential to live longer and be better for the environment.
Peter says the family farm Holsteins because of their longevity and milk production capability.
“A lot of people think the Holsteins are too big and bad environmentally but when you can milk one Holstein and get the same returns as milking two cows, they’re actually better for the environment.”
